The Churnet Valley is an un spoilt gem on the edge of the Peak District. It is best known for its main tourist attraction, Alton Towers, which is one of the country's favourite theme parks and a great family destination. Spend a couple of days at Alton Towers but be sure to stay long enough to explore the other attractions that the area offers: great walking, zoo, steam railway, canals, tea rooms, quirky pubs, Ashbourne, Leek, Stoke (aka The Potteries), Buxton (and the Opera House), historic houses and National Trust properties. Barks is fantastically rural, set in lovely open countryside, but it is not isolated because the owners are nearby. They have a small-holding with sheep, friendly dogs and hens that always entertain young families. Walks across the fields and into the woods of the Churnet Valley can be 15 mins and child friendly, or all day taking in pubs and tea rooms. In fact there are many recommended and published walks that can be accessed straight from the cottage. The nearest town with supermarkets is 4 miles away and the take-away restaurant there will deliver to the cottage!
