Shaftesbury sits on a 700 ft high outcrop of rock and the cottage therefore benefits from spectactular views over the Blackmore Vale - miles of glorious English countryside.
The hillside garden is a sheltered spot often allowing guests to enjoy coffee outside in the early spring.
The now ruined Shaftesbury Abbey was founded by the Alfred the Great in the C9th and the massive walls form one side of Gold Hill to this day.
Gold Hill has been the location for numerous films such as the 1970s Ridley Scott 'Boy on a Bicycle' advert for Hovis Bread and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbevilles.
Shaftesbury is about 45mins - 1 hr from the Jurassic coast and 30 mins from the beautiful Salisbury Cathedral, Sherborne Abbey, Stonehenge, Wardour Castle, Longleat and Stourhead. Bath and Wells are also within the hour.
The area is renowned for its local excellent food, music festivals and popular, picturesque wedding locations
How to get there
Detailed travel directions are provided but it is possible to reach the cottage by car, National Express coaches (to only a few metres away) or train to Gillingham Station only 4 miles away which is well served by the local taxi companies.
